API 5L pipelines are widely used for transporting oil, natural gas, water, and for the natural gas industry. API 5L refers to the American Petroleum Institute's standard, which is prepared and issued worldwide.Oil, crude oil, natural gas, water, or natural gas is transported underground through API 5L pipelines to oil and gas companies for further processing. Oil and gas pipelines include seamles pipes and welded pipes, and have three types of ends: plain, threaded, and socketed. The main steel grades are B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X65, and X70.
After dozens of revisions, the latest API SPEC 5L, version 46 (released in 2018), has made significant updates to version 45, including requirements for welded joints, an expanded scope of non-destructive testing, and the addition of requirements for longitudinal plastic strain capacity.
This standard is harmonized with the ISO 3183 international standard, achieving global standard consistency.
The standard specifies two product specification levels: PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 has stricter mandatory requirements for carbon equivalent, notch toughness, maximum yield strength, and tensile strength, making it suitable for more demanding applications.
