SSAW Tube vs LSAW Tube

SSAW Tube and LSAW Tube are carbon steel tubes using submerged arc welding technology. Submerged arc welding is a welding method in which the arc burns under the flux layer. Its inherent advantages of stable welding quality, high welding productivity, no arc and little smoke make it the main welding method in the production of important steel structures such as pressure vessels, pipe sections, box beams and columns.

LSAW(Straight seam submerged arc) is produced by pressing (rolling) a single medium and heavy plate in a mold or a forming machine, using double-sided submerged arc welding and expanding the diameter. The finished product has a wide range of specifications, good toughness, plasticity, uniformity and compactness of the weld, and has the advantages of large pipe diameter, pipe wall thickness, high pressure resistance, low temperature resistance and strong corrosion resistance. It is widely used in the construction of high-strength, high-toughness, high-quality long-distance oil and gas pipelines. According to API standards, in large-scale oil and gas pipelines, when passing through Category 1 and Category 2 areas such as alpine regions, seabed, and urban densely populated areas, the straight seam submerged arc is the only designated pipe type.

SSAW steel pipe (spiral submerged arc welded steel pipe) is that when the pipe is rolled, its advancing direction and the center line of the forming pipe have a forming angle, and the welding is performed while forming, and the welding seam is a spiral. The advantage is that the same specification can produce steel pipes of various diameters, the adaptability of raw materials is large, the welding seam can avoid the principal stress, and the stress condition is better. The disadvantage is that the geometric size is poor, the length of the welding seam is longer than that of the straight seam tube, and welding defects such as cracks, pores, slag inclusions, and welding deviations are easy to occur, and the welding stress is in a state of tensile stress. Generally, the design specification for long-distance oil and gas pipelines stipulates that the spiral submerged arc can only be used in Category 3 and Category 4 areas.

main feature

Main features of LSAW steel pipe:
1) The steel pipe has a longitudinal weld, and the inner and outer welds are welded by a submerged arc welding.
2) After the overall mechanical expansion treatment, the internal stress of the steel pipe is small and evenly distributed, which can effectively prevent stress corrosion cracking, and has high dimensional accuracy, which is convenient for on-site welding construction.
3) Using the pre-welding and fine welding process, the welding process is stable and the welding seam quality is high. The welding seam is easy to realize the non-destructive inspection in the production process and the non-destructive inspection in the field during the use process.
4) The product specification range is large, which can produce steel pipes with small diameter and large wall thickness as well as large diameter and large wall thickness.

Main features of SSAW steel pipe:
1) The equipment investment of spiral submerged arc welded pipe is less, the production process is simple, the operating cost is low, and it has the advantage of low-cost operation.
2) The application in pressure pipeline engineering, especially gas pipeline, should have necessary hardware configuration, such as non-destructive testing and physical and chemical testing facilities, it is necessary to strengthen quality assurance measures, and implement supervision strictly according to the production license.
